I've been reminiscing with Chris Field, owner of CJF Electrical Services on how we launched his business, how it's evolved and continues to thrive today. Chris is a reliable and professional electrician who has grown his expertise into a trusted electrical services company that has been running for over five years.
Why did you decide to launch your business in late 2019?
After starting as an apprentice over 20 years ago and working for other people, I’d always wanted to build something of my own. In late 2019 I decided the time was right. Looking back, it wasn’t exactly perfect timing – within three months, the world was facing COVID-19. I guess there’s never really a perfect moment to launch a business though – in the words of Nike, I think "just do it.”
How did you promote and evolve your business during COVID-19?
Launching a new business is challenging at the best of times, but when a global pandemic hits just months after you start, you have to adapt quickly. I think I was fortunate to have good connections in the industry which ment I could still work on some construction sites. And also because Hannah established CJF Electrical Services’ brand presence from day one, I had a strong online identity – a social media strategy that helped me stay visible so when things opened up I was front of mind.
Why is it important to have a website for your business?
Your website is your shop window – it’s often the first thing potential customers see, in my business they're looking at quality of work so project case studies and testimonials of a job well done. Having a professional, clear, and easy-to-navigate website builds trust instantly. Hannah built our site completely from the ground up with very little input from me on the messaging because she already understood the electrical sector. That expertise meant she could position CJF Electrical Services clearly and effectively online. Without that I think it would have been much harder to stand out from other electricians.
How did you decide on your brand logo?
Choosing a logo felt like a big decision because it’s the face of your business. Hannah gave me a wide range of options to review, then tweaked and refined them based on my feedback until she created a design I really liked. Hannah advised that a strong brand identity is especially important in such a competitive marketplace because customers need to remember you and trust your professionalism at a glance. That's why I went with my initials and combination of words that make it really clear what services I offer.
What role did marketing support play in establishing your business?
Marketing support was critical to building CJF Electrical Services. It's not an area I know anything about. Hannah not only created the logo and built the website, she produced branded templates for quotes and invoices, and even opened up new business connections. She completely managed the social media, setting up social media channels and creating a 12-month bank of social media posts. Having that full marketing infrastructure in place gave me the time and confidence to focus on delivering high-quality electrical work.
What impact has all this had on CJF Electrical Services?
The impact has been huge. With a solid brand, clear messaging, and a professional online presence, CJF Electrical Services has grown into an established, trusted business now running for over five years. The early investment in branding and marketing gave me visibility during difficult times and continues to help win new clients today. Looking back, working with Hannah was one of the best decisions I made because it gave me time to focus on what I do best, electrical work.
