Last year, I shared how I combined my love for crafting with the festive spirit of Christmas and perhaps my next step would be selling my crafts. Well I did it. I spent this year crafting and getting a stall created for hannahmade christmas to sell my Christmas creations. So this month, I'm excited to take you behind the scenes of my journey at two local Christmas craft markets.
🛍️ Setting up shop
Preparing for a craft market involves more than just packing your products. It's about creating an inviting space that reflects your brand and attracts customers. I really wanted to be a window dresser when I left school so I enjoyed this process. I focused on:
Display. Using tiered stands and I upcycled a kids bookshelf to attract attention, add depth and showcase my decorations effectively.
Branding. By incorporating hannahmade's brand colours I tried to make my stall instantly recognisable.
Lighting. Of course I added fairy lights and flickering candles. The twinkling drew attention and created a warm and cosy, festive atmosphere.
🤝 Engaging with customers
I found one of the most rewarding aspects of attending craft markets was the direct interaction with customers. I tried to:
Share the story. Explaining the inspiration behind each decoration and the crafting process.
Offer personalised recommendations. Helping customers choose decorations that fit their home or as gifts.
Collect feedback. Listening to customers' thoughts and suggestions for future products.
💡 Lessons Learned
Each market is a learning experience. Here are some takeaways:
Product range. Offering a variety of price points, from small ornaments to larger centrepieces, catered to different budgets.
Bundling. Creating themed sets, for example: pink colours and fairy themed, encouraged customers to purchase multiple items.
Preparation. Having enough stock was hard to judge, so I only committed to small events and a couple of days this year.
🎁 Looking Ahead
The success of these markets has inspired me to expand my offerings and explore more venues next year. I'm considering pushing my workshops more next year – hosting crafting sessions to share my skills and connect with the community. And i'd like to partner with local businesses for exclusive products or events.
