Life gets busy. Between work, family commitments and everyday routines, it’s all too easy for couples to slip into autopilot. After almost 10 years in a relationship myself, I’ve seen firsthand how complacency can quietly creep in if you’re not intentional about spending quality time together. That’s why setting aside time each week for date night is so important – it’s not just fun, it keeps your connection alive and thriving.

Making date night a habit

We pick a day on Sunday that will be our “date night” for the following week and take turns planning it. This simple system keeps things fair and gives both of us the opportunity to surprise each other. And while date night doesn’t have to be expensive, a little creativity goes a long way.

Fun tools to spark ideas

One thing that’s really added to our excitement is the Adventure Challenge Mini Date Cards. They offer simple, creative prompts that inspire dates you might not have thought of otherwise.

Alongside these, we've also used lolly sticks with ideas for weekend adventures – each pick is a mini surprise. And a post-it note pot filled with at-home activities like HIIT class in the garden, board game challenge and night music night where we revisit bands we loved at festivals. These little tools help remove the “what should we do?” stress and turn every week into something to look forward to.

During COVID, we had to get really creative since going out wasn’t an option. Some of our favourite at-home date nights included:

  • Movie nights with munchies boxes we put together ourselves

  • Mexican night with fancy dress ordered from Amazon

  • Chinese takeaway nights where we dressed up as if we were dining out

  • Picking a country and cooking a cuisine from that country.

These ideas proved that you don’t need to go far or spend a lot to make date night special. It's about the thought, effort and fun you put into it together.

Why it matters

Whether it’s a simple evening at home or an adventurous outing, regular date nights remind you to pause, reconnect and celebrate your relationship. The key is consistency, creativity and a willingness to try something new. It keeps the spark alive, strengthens your bond and creates memories that last far longer than any takeaway night ever could.

So grab some cards, a pot of post-its or a handful of lolly sticks and make your date nights something to look forward to every week.
