The cookbooks that changed my kitchen

Over the past year, I’ve tried a mix of recipe books and apps to make cooking easier, healthier and more enjoyable for myself and my family. Some have been game-changers, others a little hit and miss. Here’s my take on each one:

1. Joe Wicks – The Body Coach

I actually stumbled across Joe Wicks’ books in the special aisle at Aldi and they’ve been a family favourite ever since. My family takes turns picking recipes and cooking them – which has made mealtimes much more collaborative and less stressful.

The recipes are straightforward and approachable, making it easier to eat well without complicated prep. While the books are great, Joe’s app: The Body Coach app adds another layer with recipe resources included. Perfect for those who like a bit of structure and variety in their healthy eating.

2. Noom

Noom was something I used alongside a weight loss programme. What stood out to me wasn’t so much the recipes (though they exist) but the behavioural aspect – it’s about shifting your mindset. The app really focuses on psychology and healthy habits, which was helpful for keeping me accountable. However, I wouldn’t call it a go-to recipe app. It’s better for those looking for guidance and structure on their overall journey, rather than meal inspiration.

3. Pinch of Nom

Pinch of Nom has become a go-to source in my kitchen when I want meals that are comforting, home-style and satisfying – without feeling like I’m on a rigid diet. The recipes are well laid-out and accessible; prep times are reasonable, ingredients are familiar and there are helpful tips about freezing, substitutions and swapping things up so you don’t get bored. What I particularly like is how the meals feel indulgent but aren’t overloaded with calories. Its 'fakeaway' ideas stand out, as do hearty family meals and easy weekday dinner options. The community-led approach is also a big plus: you can tell recipes have been tested with real home cooks, which adds trust. If you want doable, tasty food that nudges you toward healthier habits (without scaring you off with strict rules) this cook book is for you.

4. HelloFresh

At first, it felt like a dream – no more last-minute supermarket dashes or wondering what’s for dinner. I loved how HelloFresh cuts down on food waste and planning stress. But after a few months, the novelty wore off. The meals started to feel repetitive, and one week I realised we’d eaten green beans for five days straight! It’s a great option if you want convenience and portion control, but perhaps not the most exciting long-term.

5. The Fast 800

This one I absolutely love. The Fast 800 isn’t just a diet, it’s a complete lifestyle programme. It focuses on building long-term, healthy habits rather than quick fixes, and I’ve really felt the benefits – from better sleep to improved energy levels.

The app is super practical, with weekly shopping lists and flexible menu choices that make planning a breeze. The recipes are genuinely delicious and easy to follow, which makes sticking to it so much easier. If you want something sustainable and supportive, this is one I’d wholeheartedly recommend.

6. Crohn’s and Colitis Fix: 10 Week Plan

I picked up Crohn’s and Colitis Fix: 10 Week Plan for Reversing IBD Symptoms and Getting Rid of Fatigue on Amazon and found it eye-opening. It’s packed with recipes and information that helped me understand what foods work best for my body. Learning to tailor meals around digestive health has been empowering and the new recipes I discovered have become staples in my kitchen.

Flavours to fuel your future

Each of these books and apps brought something different to the table (literally!). For convenience, HelloFresh worked in the short term. For family fun, Joe Wicks’ books were a hit. Noom helped with mindset, while The Fast 800 has been the most impactful for long-term health. And the Crohn’s and Colitis Fix taught me more about cooking for my own well-being than I expected.

If you’re looking to shake up your cooking or wellness routine, I’d say give a couple of these a try – you might find your perfect fit, just like I did.
