When my partner surprised me with a six-week Spanish course at Vici Language Academy, I was really excited. So excited, that I treated myself to a brand-new pencil case, colourful pens and a fresh notebook – because if you’re going back to school, you may as well do it in style!
After work, we would head off to our lessons with Santiago, who not only introduced us to Spanish basics but also gave us a taste of Spanish culture and food along the way. It wasn’t just grammar and vocabulary – it was tapas, traditions and plenty of laughter. Learning together made it feel less like studying and more like a shared adventure.
When the course finished, I didn’t want the fun to end, so I signed up to Babbel. Now, I dip in and out of the app when I have time, keeping my Spanish alive with my own little practice sessions.
Putting Spanish into practice
Once a year we travel to Spain – usually Lanzarote, El Campello, or Marbella – and we make a point of using our Spanish as much as possible. We’ll learn a new sentence for each trip – last time it was “Where is the taxi rank?”. We ask for menus in Spanish, and order our meals in the local language. It might not be perfect, but it’s always appreciated, and it makes the whole experience richer.
Our efforts even came in handy in Mexico, where we managed to get by with the little Spanish we’d picked up. It’s amazing how just a few words and phrases can open doors, spark smiles and build connections with hotel staff and locals.
Why keep learning?
We're far from fluent, but that’s not the point. For us, learning Spanish is about making the effort, showing respect for the country we’re visiting and having fun together along the way. Each new word adds to our confidence and each trip gives us a chance to put what we’ve learned into practice.
So here’s to more notebooks, more tapas and many more Spanish adventures!
