Is it time for the chop? Why a hair change can be the perfect fresh start

We all get the itch sometimes – the desire for something new, something different, something that feels like a little reset button in life. And when that feeling comes along, there’s one place many of us start: our hair.

Hair is personal. It frames our face, shapes how we present ourselves, and has this magical ability to shift how we feel inside. That’s why, when people want a fresh start – after a breakup, before a new job, at the change of a season – they so often reach for the scissors, book a salon appointment or grab a box of hair dye.

It’s not just about the hair itself. It’s about identity, confidence, and expressing who you are right now.

Over the years, I’ve experimented with it all:

  • Lengths: long, short, and everything in between.

  • Textures: poker straight, bouncy curls, braids, plaits and the occasional frizz-taming serum adventure.

  • Colours: classic highlights, rich reds, home packet dyes (some more successful than others!) and indulgent salon foil sessions.

Each change gave me something new – not just in the mirror, but in how I felt. A sharp bob made me feel confident and bold. Long waves made me feel feminine and free. Going red felt daring, while highlights brought a little sparkle to everyday life.

So why hair?

Because it’s temporary and transformative at the same time. Unlike a tattoo or a big purchase, hair grows out, colours fade and there’s always another style waiting. It’s a safe playground for reinvention.

Small ways to switch it up

Not every hair change has to be drastic. If you’re tempted by something new but not quite ready for a full chop, here are a few low-commitment ways to experiment:

  • ✂️ Try a fringe*. It can completely change your look without losing length. (*If you are cutting it yourself, start long and trim up gradually.)

  • 🌟 Gloss treatments add shine and richness to your current colour.

  • 🎨 Face-framing highlights are a subtle way to brighten your look.

  • 🌀 Texture play. Curlers, straighteners, or heatless waves can transform your style for a day.

  • 🪞 Styling swaps. By changing your parting or trying braids/plaits can make your hair feel fresh with zero scissors involved.

Trends vs. Personal Style

It’s tempting to see a cut on Instagram, TikTok, or a celebrity and think, “I want that!” Trends can be inspiring, but they don’t always translate into real life. The best hair changes are the ones that suit you – your face shape, your lifestyle and most importantly, your personality.

For example, a short pixie might look incredible on your favourite influencer, but if you love being able to pull your hair into a messy bun on a Sunday morning, it may not feel right for you. On the flip side, sometimes chasing a trend leads you to something you wouldn’t have tried otherwise, and it becomes your signature look.

The trick is balance: use trends for inspiration, but listen to your gut about what feels like you. There are some apps now that you can upload a picture to and see what style and colour works for your face shape.

Over to you

Whether it’s a full chop, a new colour, or just a playful change in how you style your hair, experimenting with your look can feel like pressing refresh. The question is: is now your time?
