How to source crafting materials the hannahmade way

Crafting isn’t just about making something beautiful, it’s also about how we choose our materials. At hannahmade, I believe creativity and care go hand in hand and that includes caring for the planet. That’s why so much of what I use in my projects come from things that already exist, rather than always buying new.

Here are some of my favourite ways to gather materials, while staying true to my ethos of reuse, recycle and upcycle.

Everyday treasures. Reuse and upcycle.

  • Egg boxes aren’t just for eggs! I use them to package my pom pom pixie sets. They’re sturdy, recyclable and i think give a handmade feel.

  • Whenever birthdays or Christmas roll around, I keep the cards, boxes and bags. With a little imagination, they’re ready for a second life.

  • Old clothes that can’t go to charity still have treasures to offer. I snip off buttons and those little hanger ribbons inside tops. I also save price tag ties from new clothes. All of these end up in my crafting stash.

Shopping smart. Stocking up sustainably.

I try to only replenish my crafty stocks when needed and usually only at a reduced price. Keeping an eye on sales means I can build my collection without unnecessary waste.

Some of my go-to suppliers are:

  • Hobbycraft and The Works are great for basics and seasonal supplies.

  • Etsy and Amazon Small Businesses because I like sourcing unique items and supporting other makers.

  • Facebook Marketplace is brilliant for second-hand bargains and surplus craft bundles.

  • B&M is my secret spot for affordable ribbons!

Nature’s craft store.

The outdoors is full of inspiration and free materials:

  • I’m growing my own pumpkins this year for Halloween carving. Nothing beats picking your own!

  • I like to go foraging at Christmas. Holly, ivy, and fir branches make the most magical natural decorations. With a little care, you can gather responsibly and bring the season indoors.

hannahmade ethos: From Past to Present

Every hannahmade piece is created with care, creativity and respect for the world around us. I choose natural materials and some things that have already had a life of their own, or are not being used. By reimagining them into something new, beautiful and one-of-a-kind, we can reduce waste and honour stories from the past – keeping them alive and packaging them as a present for today.

Crafting doesn’t have to mean consuming. With a little imagination, the materials we need are already all around us.
